PITTSBURGH -- A new study shows that men who took a Viagra pill before sexual activity in combination with other drugs may have a higher chance of getting better erections, a new study suggests.
Researchers analyzed more than 2,500 men across five clinical trials who had taken Viagra before sexual activity in combination with other drugs to see how they responded to their treatments.
"It was an interesting study because it showed that Viagra and other PDE5 inhibitors may have similar effects on erectile function," said lead researcher, Phyllis J. Smith of the University of Pittsburgh's School of Public Health.
The new research shows that Viagra in combination with another PDE5 inhibitor, Cialis, may have a better effect on erections than Viagra alone.
"Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common sexual disorders worldwide and a major cause of morbidity, disability, and death in men," said study co-author, lead author, and senior researcher, men's health researcher Dr. Joseph W. Cuzick, M. D.
The researchers did not know how much of the study's findings would have been impacted by the use of other PDE5 inhibitors. The drugs also were not designed to increase sexual desire.
"They were designed for a very small sample size and therefore may not have been able to capture the whole population," said study co-author, Phyllis J. Smith, M.
"The results of the study show that men who took Cialis in combination with other PDE5 inhibitors had significantly more erections than those who did not take the drugs," she said.
Researchers also noted that Viagra's effects on sexual desire were similar to those of the drugs that Cialis was designed to replace.
Researchers said the findings were interesting because they suggest that the drugs may have similar effects on erectile function.
The new study was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
"This study is important because it suggests that if you take Viagra as well as Cialis and have erectile dysfunction you should have an improved sexual response, and we hope that this is a result that you and your partner can share with each other," said Dr. Cuzick.
The researchers are also concerned about possible over-the-counter drug interactions that could occur during treatment, including Viagra, Cialis, and some erectile dysfunction drugs.
