Viagra (sildenafil) is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection for satisfactory sexual activity in men, also known as impotence. Sildenafil belongs to a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Viagra works by relaxing muscles found in the walls of blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation to get and keep an erection. Keep in mind that Viagra does not cure erectile dysfunction or increase sexual desire.

The new UK drug for treating low libido (libido) has been nicknamed the "female Viagra" after the first pill to treat an inability to become aroused. But, a new study suggests it might be worth the risk.
The findings suggest that women whose low libido is not due to a physical or psychological problem might be at risk of getting the drug.
The study, published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, found that women who took the pill had a significant increase in their libido as well as a decrease in their sexual satisfaction.
"For women with a low libido, the number of sexual encounters increased, but this is not due to the increase in sexual desire. It is related to the psychological impact of the condition," said study author, Prof Glynis Edwards.
But there were also many questions about what it means to "get the female brain aroused" or how to avoid this risk.
"The drugs that are used to treat low libido, such as the ones used to treat Premenstrual Dysfuntion (PMDD) and others, have a significant impact on the brain," Prof Edwards said. "The psychological effect of these drugs might also be associated with the sexual relationship."
The new research, published in the British Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, looked at the effects of women who had previously reported feeling low sexual desire.
"They were often treated with drugs that were similar to those prescribed to them, including herbal medicines," Prof Edwards said.
The drugs in the study were taken by two groups of women, one group took one pill of the drug and the other group took another pill. They were given a dose of 50mg and were asked to report how many sexual encounters they had and how often they had gone. The results showed that the women who took the pill had a significantly better outcome in their relationship.
"This shows that women who have tried other forms of treatment have also shown greater improvements in their sexual satisfaction with the pill," Prof Edwards said.
This study was supported by grants from the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust and the Wellcome Trust.
Dr Rosemary D. Williams, professor of clinical psychiatry and neurosciences at the University of Manchester, said: "The results from this research show that women with low sexual desire are more likely to achieve a more satisfying relationship, and that this is true even when the women are not experiencing significant psychological effects from the medication."
Women who have a low libido have a very high risk of experiencing the problem. The new study, published in British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, shows that women with a low libido have a significantly better chance of getting the drug, and it is not just the women who were treated with the pills."This is a landmark finding, and the researchers are working closely with patients to come up with a better treatment plan," Prof Edwards said.
"If you are concerned about the side effects of the drug, it is important that you discuss them with your doctor."
